Our Advantage
Engineering consulting firms providing services to the power industry attempt to establish long term advisor relationships with utilities by providing as many services as possible.
Typically they offer pre-demolition surveys for asbestos and other regulated materials, environmental site assessments, structural evaluations, permit support, plans and specifications and procurement support. As the market evolved, utilities became high priority clients for these firms and they began providing project and construction management and support services including site management, health, safety and environmental inspections, project controls, community relations, and project documentation.

As closures become more commonplace, many consulting firms are attempting to act in an official decision making capacity for such important areas as when to buy, sell, hold or redevelop the site. Contracting firms are typically asked to perform tasks by utilities once they have been decided on. Asset Recovery Firms are normally contractors who have “re-packaged” their approach in an effort to persuade utilities to allow them to assist in maximizing the value of a retiring asset.
Asset recovery firms typically remove and sell as much high value product as possible leaving behind unwanted debris, a site in a worse condition than it was receive and the creation of increased liability for the utility. From there the process of figuring out how to correct the situation has become a far larger task than it was originally. The industry today is littered with examples of sites that have been pilfered of material that has value to these asset recovery groups and then left in complete disarray for the sellers to try and fix at much higher costs.
ERS provides total site solutions for utilities and completely eliminates the potential for unethical practices. Our goals become the same as the utilities and because we self-perform a large portion of onsite work during the course of projects, we build insurance tools into each portion of a project to fully protect all parties. Our risk transfers and/or acquisitions are complete with time and work commitments and are completed in a transparent manner so sellers completely understand project from “cradle to grave.”
Development firms looking at power production sites to acquire for future development will analyze the potential based on long term site use and potential developments that can be achieved and maximize returns. Even firms that position themselves as liability acquisition companies will analyze real estate in traditional ways focusing on location and future uses.
